“My SL Family Story” challenge

So today I decided that I wanted to have a try at starting an SL blogger challenge. It isn’t exactly a “challenge” in the exact sense of the word, but I thought that for some people it might be a challenge to share these kinds of things with an audience. I know that for some people it can be a sensitive topic. Both for people who are in the Second Life family community as well as for people who aren’t. People who aren’t, however, tend to have quite a closed and maybe even negative perspective on SL families, or SL children in particular. This is definitely one of the reasons that I decided to do this challenge. I want to share my view on it, and I would love to read other people’s experiences and opinions on it as well.

The rules are very easy: take a picture with a member (or multiple members) of your SL family, and answer the questions below. Take my answers out, and put in your own. Then, when you publish your blogpost leave a comment (either here on my blog, or on the picture on my Flickr) and provide a link so I, as well as others, can read it! I do want to state that if you have a negative view or expierence with SL families, to not leave negative comments. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and opinions may not always be voluntarily – but you always have a choice between spreading negativity or not. I certainly hope this enlightens people, and who knows, maybe even gets some people to try out the SL family community themselves! Because I can tell you, there certainly are a few amazing people you can meet, and a lot of love to be given and received.

1. What is your SL family surname?
Grey-King. Grey from my mom, King from my dad.

2. What is the make-up of your family? (Parents, kids, siblings etc)
Mom & dad, one twin sister, one baby sister, one forever sister. Then there’s my two kids, my grandmother, and my aunts. I have some nieces too, and I even have a grandchild!

3. How long have you been in the SL family community?
Err, I would say almost two years now

4. When did you first hear about the SL family community and what was your view on it before you were in it?
Hmm, I think I first heard about it from an SL and RL friend of mine. I think she told me about these age-play sims that had been in the news, and that there were perverts playing as kids and well… doing innapropriate stuff. I guess you could say that my first impression wasn’t very good. From that moment on I thought SL kids were creepy, simply because I thought all of them were perverted. Later on, whenever I came across people who had stuff about their SL families in their picks (since I was at Hogwarts: Your Story and Mischief Managed a lot, I quite often ran into SL teenagers who had families) I thought “ew…” I thought that these people had some serious psychological issues. I thought maybe they had mommy- and daddy issues.

5. How did you join your (first) SL family?
My mom kind of forced me into it. Honestly, that’s how it went. I thought SL families were creepy, but I lived on the homestead of my mom back then with my now forever sister Rose and my mom. I think Rose was talking about her SL mom, and then, Anna just asked me: “Elisa do you have SL parents!?” and I said no, so she immediately responded with “Well then now you’re my daughter.” And I’ve been her daughter ever since.

6. Do you have a kid avatar?
Yes, both on my alt as well as on my main account! Sometimes I get lazy and don’t want to log into my alt to, for example, test a rig or simply when I want to annoy my mom or want to take a picture with her.

7. Do you have an adult avatar?
Yep, my main avatar.

8. When did you first decide to make a child avatar?
At some point I had identified myself as a teen avatar. I was always roleplaying at Mischief Managed as a teenager. The age-range in Mischief Managed (or Hogwarts: Your Story back then) is 11 to 17, so naturally, I looked young. I also wore my IC avatar while I was OOC, and therefore just started calling myself a teen avatar. Sometimes my mom had friends with SL children, and they would be amazingly adorable. They acted so cute, looked adorable, and I realized that really not every child avatar was a perverted creep. I had also previously thought that they looked weird – but due to some kid avatars on Flickr, Plurk and SL facebook I started to see that they could look very adorable! So at some point, my mom asked me if I wanted to make a kid avatar, and we went shopping together. At first I had a big kid avatar, and later on I bought a ToddleeDoo mesh avatar as well, since that’s easier to buy clothes for.

9. Why do you play a child avatar?
I choose to play a child avatar because it’s a lot of fun. It’s fun to take pictures and look cute, it’s fun to annoy my mom, it’s fun to run around and be silly and adorable. It’s fun to hit other kids, whine about wanting a unicorn for your birthday – and to ask your mommy for ice cream. It’s a lot of fun, and from the very beginning I have enjoyed being and acting like a child. It’s completely innocent, and I just love it.

10. What do you like about being a parent in SL?
I love having children in SL. I’ve been an SL mom for about… well, maybe 6 months now. The first few months were a bit weird (that’s when I first started trying to start my own SL family, since my mom had left SL temporarily) and in the beginning it didn’t really work out. I thought that maybe I wasn’t cut out to be a mom in SL and that I should stop trying. But my first real daughter Niki or Sticky came as a little blessing and I love her so much for making my family expierence in SL so much better. Later on we looked for a sibling for her, and found my son Henry. I would be lying if I would say that the fact that I would love to have children irl in the future wouldn’t be a contributing factor to why I love being a mom in SL. It definitely is, but the thing that I enjoy most about being a mom is just that besides having two children, I have two amazing friends that I love.

11. Do you do family roleplay? If so, what kind of roleplay? Paragraphs, emoting – or just “acting like”?
I don’t really do family roleplay in the sense of paragraph roleplaying or just roleplaying how I normally do in roleplay sims. We don’t post paragraphs of text and sit down and have a meal together. I do, however, act like a mother with my kids. I do act like a kid when I am in my kid avatar. I, for example, emote that I throw food at my sister or hit her. Or I ground my kids for doing those things to their siblings. I haven’t really done intensive family paragraph roleplay yet – maybe have a dinner and actually sit down and roleplay it out – but that’s definitely something I want to try.

12. Do you have any special family-related activities? (Dinners, camp etc.)
We don’t really have dinners but I think I might ask my family to do this with me! I remember I had one dinner with my sister, nieces and kid once and that was pretty funny. My sister pretended to cook spaghetti and eventually called for a pizza and we just sat there and had fun. Beside that I did go to camp Hardknock last week, and that was soo much fun. I loved it. It gave me kind of an idea how other SL families work – since mine is crazy.

13. What is the thing you love most about your SL family?
I love that my family is crazy. I love that we have an enormous mansion with a stable in front of it and even had a pool in the back – and love that we pretend to be all rich and stuff. I love it when my mom threatens to cut my creditcard in half, or when I make a mess and tell her that the maid will clean it. I like to tell my mom I’m having an affair with our imaginary poolboy, or that I stole her ex boyfriends from her. I love taking pictures with them, or just talking. But most of all, I love that my family isn’t just my family, but first of all just my tight group of friends that I have a lot of fun with.

SO. Dead Apples released some uh-ma-zing new eyes, perfectly in time for Halloween. They come in LOADS of colors. You can go for the dead, white eye look, or for the opposite, black, and all of the colors inbetween. Some colors are a mix between two, like the purple and yellow (which are among my favorites since they are two opposite colors but work so well together) and of course, the solid colors. I really enjoy these eyes, and the fact that they come with mesh eyeballz too. This means, clearer textures AND you can wear one color in one eye, and a different one in another!
              Now I’ve always loved these these dolls from *COCO*, but didn’t like that I couldn’t have my own head on it. Don’t get me wrong, the heads are extremely well made and look amazing, but I just love tattoo layers, wearing fantasy eyes, scars, or maybe I’m just a little vain. So I noticed someone on Flickr wearing one of the doll dresses, and I thought “wth, but it’s a completely different rig?” and noticed that she was wearing just the doll’s body. So I pulled my doll out of my inventory, made an alpha, and just didn’t wear the head part. I love the effect! Especially for Halloween.
             Another little thing that I want to adress is my Loud Mouth! I was editing it a bit, and ugh, blah, blergh, I just didn’t like the shape. I like my mouths kind of narrow, with thick lips, and the Loud Mouth is kind of broad in my opinion. So I tried resizing it, but it didn’t get the effect I wanted. So then I thought… what if I click “edit linked parts” and edit it that way? And it totally worked! So happy about that! If you do try to try this yourself you should note that there is a lipstick layer and that you have to edit that seperately too, since you cant edit them both at a time. I love this effect way more though, and I’m very happy with how it looks now. I still wish that they were a little fuller, because I just personally love that, but who knows, maybe their next mouth will be with thick, lucious and pouty lips.

So Villena seems to have been working hard and has planned to open a hairstore! There are never enough hairstores, right? And especially when they’re good. And in my very humble opinion, these hairs are amazing. Ever since she showed the wavy hair in her dungaree ad I’ve been waiting anxiously for (SOMEONE!?) to release it. However, by the tags that she had put on her Flickr photo I kinda expected her to release it herself! I thought maybe at hairfair… so this came as a surprise! I hope she is participating in Hair Fair though – that would be awesome! Anyway, I got the pre-release, but don’t sob too hard, it’ll be available soon. What’s your Digits?

YESYESYES omg I’ve been waiting to do this ever since I started blogging! Last year I saw Flickr flood with pictures of everyone sharing their digits, and that was around the time that I started to think “God, blogging looks like so much fun…” Of course, I could’ve just made the picture and done this on my Flickr like I’ve seen many people do, but somehow I just didn’t dare to do it. When Rose mentioned this today, however, I just couldn’t wait to get started! So here is mine, the Strawberry Singh “What’s your Digits: Proportions” challenge!

Proportions Challenge Questions:

1. Do you try and keep your avatar’s body proportionate and similar to the “average” proportions pictured above? – I’ve always tried to keep my avatar as proportionate as possible. I draw irl and I love to – mainly – draw people, faces, and bodies. This requires from me that I know what I’m doing when I’m drawing, or it’ll just look awful and weird. This doesn’t mean that I claim to know everything about proportions – in fact, I hope to get a lot better with body proportions and have more of an eye for it. Whenever I edit my avatar’s body, though, I keep a picture next to it because I really don’t want to be too off.
2. What do you dislike the most about the SL avatar mesh? – The hands and the feet, but more like… a lot of it. Like the fact that almost nothing on the body is smooth: there are always parts that have these square edges, and I hate those. That’s why I tend to focus on the things that I /can/ get to look as smooth as possible. Examples are the outline of the eyes, the waist, hips and even ears.
3. Does it bother you when you see other avatars that are not proportionate at all? – Kind of, yes. Now that we have mesh I think that it is much easier for people to look proportionate, especially in their torso. Though as I have read somewhere, I think on Flickr under a picture of someone who was doing this challenge as well, I think that as a human being we are always seeing people in the right proportion irl, and that the human eye just expects to see something that is soothing and looks correct.
4. Even though this is a virtual world and people can be anything they want to be, do you feel when they are in human form, they should try to keep their proportions close to average? Erm, it depends. I mean, if you’re going for a human “character” or avatar I think the best you can do is to actually make it look as human as possible. Everyone should really do as they please, though.

So this part is not at all required but I saw this at Berry’s post and I thought it would be funny to see how mine look. And gosh… I understand why I edit my shape sometimes. These are four of my shapes, I wore different skins in them, hence why I’m wearing different skins and stuff. The first two were roleplay characters, and I think I roleplay “someone” better when I don’t look like “me” (that doesn’t mean my avatar looks like me lol, not at all). I think I’ll just give a few pointers on these shapes, ’cause I kinda feel like explaining why they look how they look!

• The first two shapes are shorter, mainly because I roleplay (I don’t roleplay a lot anymore, sadfaise) in the roleplay sim Mischief Managed, and those characters are teen. These two were 14 and 15, I think. The second one was Asian, I like to think that I got those features right (narrower eyes, rounder face shape) I think that, for teen avatars, they have a bit too much hip… but I like curvy women and avatars, (not unnatually curvy) but I’ll get back on that.
• The third shape really was my first main avatar. I was always roleplaying before I started blogging and… well, doing stuff other than roleplaying – so I was really having a hard time making an avatar that I really felt comfortable in. But then Glam Affair released the Amberly skin… and I felt at home! ROFL. Please don’t look at those arms too much though… :/ ew. Those are just… too damn long.
• I think the thing that changes most about my avatar (besides the face) are the hips. If you look at the last one, which is me currently, you can see that the gap between the legs is really minimal. I don’t really… like that gap, never really have. I mean I don’t mind it, when it’s not too big, but I like it to be as small as possible in SL. A few weeks ago I really started changing my avatar a lot, and as I said, I really want the hips and waist to be RIGHT. So I changed it and changed it… But I couldn’t get that gap to look right without having my hips be all square and pointy. But I finally got it!
• I’m really pleased with how I look right now. I looooooove this new skin from Essences and I’m waiting anxiously for the full release, I finally got my jaw and hips looking the way I want them to look, and like many other people (don’t deny it!) I just love looking at my avatar. I’m still going to wear that second shape when I’m finally going back to MM to roleplay, and because I love that shape as much as I love my current one.

It’s summer again, most people are on their summer break from school or work (I still have another week and a half to go) and that meansss we’re all slowly growing into the summerclothing, spring collections and summer collections of SL. Summerfest has a lot of wonderful desingers and has opened today, you can find the full list of designers here. Theres also a cute little otter by Anya Ohmai (!Ohmai) daw its just adorable. I also made some cute bracelets that I’m pretty proud of. I really wanted to see these in SL, so I hope you like ’em too! Hello my luvs. C: I’m so excited about Collabor88 this month, and about this new blog template of mine! I didn’t change much… or erh, I didn’t add much. I’ve got some very awesome new goodies for ya here. From this small event called NUMBEROLOGY (which is only from June 1st til June 15th, so hurry up!) and for Collabor88. I’m very glad to announce that from this month on I’m an official Collabor88 blogger, ánd I’m a guest designer this month, so that makes this round of Collabor88 extra special for me! The Arcade Sneak Peek

Hello there guys. Obviously, as you can see, this isn’t a normal blogpost. In fact, (considering the fact that I’m mostly featuring Olive items) this post is “anything but normal“. These are Olive’s items for The Arcade, and they are all just so much fun! From pencil’s you can fly on, to giant red cups you can stand in – all of these items show a little bit of Olive. Because the main ad (nor my blogpost) really shows how most items work or what you can do with them, you can get the shopping guide to these items at Olive’s Tableau location.

I was laughing my ass off at this little book; it’s really worth reading. Each and every poem is just as fun as the items themselves, and it gives you a very good look on what Olive is offering this round. There are 22 prizes to win, under which 4 rares. My personal favorites are the “Fly On Me Pencil” and the “Red and Solo REALLY BIG Cup”. I didn’t really get the lamps until I read the shopping guide, which page by page explains why Grandma Rose Treasures these items. Anyway, that’s one of the amazing machine’s at The Arcade this round! The hair I’m sporting in the very first picture is from Clawtooth for The Arcade, and in the next few days before the event starts I’ll try to show you all a lot more items that will be available. It kinda depends, so don’t hold your breath! I can tell you however that this is going to be the biggest Arcade round until now, featuring more than a 100 designers from over the grid! I can’t wait, and I’m sure you can’t either!

My SL Guilty Confessions Meme

Another little Strawberry Singh meme. I can’t remember the last one I did (maybe I’ve kept to doing them every week but I really can’t remember) soooo I thought it was time to do one again. This weeks is ‘My SL Guilty Confessions’ and I have no idea what I’m going to write here, but I best just get started and see what I come up with.

1. I’m very picky about skins. I never used to be like this, though. I had (have) a lot of skins and I was perfect example of a “skinwhore”. I wore multiple different skins a day, and I wore them with different shapes. I was fine like that… until I met Anais. I had worn the Lana skin from Glance a lot too, but when Anais came out @ Skin Fair I just fell in love with how I looked. I made a shape for it as I did with every other skin I owned, but this time it was different. I kept this shape and I still wear it to this day, with any other skin that I try on or wear. I’ve worn Glance for so long that I really fell in love with how the body looks, and how certain things are shaded. I’m currently in love with the skin I’m wearing in this post, from YS & YS, and that’s my main skin right now, but I really do hate the body on it. Not because it’s ugly, I don’t want to offend the skin creator in any way, but I’m just so used to how the body is shaded on my Glance skin. I’m waiting for a new Glance skin, really, and for the new League skin!
2. I’m silently judging you. I’m not a person to start drama, but just like any other person on this earth, I get very irritated with certain things that yall do. Not all of you, of course, but… Sometimes I can get very irritated with discussions on Plurk, Flickr and SL FB. Or with certain fashion fads. Or with people who are constantly bitching. Or with people who constantly claim that other people are stealing their ideas. Or with people who just take any form of drama and make a whole Flickr/Plurk/FB discussion about it. Stop it. If you’re not sure if this is you, it is, and you gotta stop right now.
3. I delete a lot of things from my inventory every day. My inventory is very organized, and I would love to keep it that way. As a blogger I get review copies, fatpacks and – ugh, sometimes it’s just too much stuff for me to handle. I delete things, sometimes I regret it, and I clean my inventory almost every month, if not little by little every single day.
4. My inventory is extremely organized. As stated above, my inventory is very organized. I’ll just show you some pictures. So this is what my inventory looks like. There’s subfolders everywhere, like this one and this one. Don’t judge me :x
5. I go crazy at The Arcade. The Arcade is in less than three weeks and, just like any other round of this event, I plan on going crazy and spending a lot of money. I just can’t help myself with this one, and I ain’t even gonna rupologize. STOP MAKING AMAZING THINGS, DESIGNERS OF THE ARCADE. STOP.

As I said in my last post, I really do love some of the items that are available at Collabor88 this month. Like the adorable overalls from U.F.O, the shirts that you can buy with it, and the dresses they are selling as well! So cute, really. LaGyo made some very cute jewelery for Collab too, but I’m only sporting the little hat from that release. It’s cute and it comes with a HUD, which makes it color-changable! LaGyo also has a headband and a ring available at The Dressing Room, the ones that I’m wearing, and I love themmmm. Also, House Of Fox released some ah-may-zing new shoes that I’ve been wearing alot. They come in different color packs, you just gotta check ’em out, and the HUD is very easy to use. The platform and the overall look that they give is the best part of them, of course!

Hey guys! Meet Anais, the prettiest face I’ve seen so far at Skin Fair 2013. Half of the designers hadn’t set up yet when I came there for the blogger preview, but I’m not ashamed to say that I think this is the best one. Of course, there are other good ones there such as Glam Affair, Essences, Rozena, Iren and many, many more. I hope you’re excited! Anyway, as for this skin – it’s from GLANCE! Yes, yes, we all love Ava for the Lana skin she brought out – and I think we’ll all love her for this one as well. May I say that I think the skin looks abselutely gorgeous on me? I will anyway; I love this skin, it looks gorgeous on me, and I’m going to wear it for a long time. Of course, the skin is available in several skintones and with Lola Tango appliers. The Cosmetics (makeups) pack is a must-have with this skin, in my opinion, because the makeups are just so very beautiful! But if you can’t afford the makeups, I can assure that other makeup will go well with it as well. I found my new forever skin (I hope!) and that’s for the first time since Lana (Glance) and Amberly (Glam Affair).
